Scientists research indicates that Marigold plant roots produce toxic chemicals that kill nematodes, also other harmful nematodes that feed on other plant roots. When it comes to Marigolds for pest control, French or African Marigolds have proven to be the most effective. Plow the Marigold flowers into the soil at the end of the growing season to provide even more control over Nematodes.
Marigold companion planting enhances the growth of basil, broccoli, cucumbers, eggplants, gourds, kale, potatoes, squash and Tomatoes. Marigold is also a very good companion plant to melons, it deters beetles. Beans and Cabbage are known as bad companion plants for Marigold.
